WATER WATER NOT A DROP.........

Is anyone worried about the lack of rain at the moment, the last resort for me is to soak my plot as we are on a site water meter, but things are getting desperate, the ground is so dry..............is it the same for others, I am as you all know in Somerset

Also my pond at home is losing about an inch a day there is a very dry wind that I think is A. Evaporating the water by blowing across the surface and B, the marginals are probably 'wicking' the water up their root system and this in turn is evaporating the water very slowly, is anyone else having this or other lack of water problems.

Morning Compo, it has been very dry here too, but that is all about to change from today. We are meant to be having a rather wet spell over the next five days. So hopefully it will reach you as well.

I really hope it rains today. I had to come to work in the car today, which is a rare occurrence, so I hope the weather makes the most of it today, as I'll be back on my bicycle tomorrow!

Its been very dry here for sometime now, Compo and I don't live that far from you as the crow flies. Its raining today but not the heavy rain that we need, more like just settling the dust.
I've been watering on and off for the last few weeks as things become established. I use soaker hoses on the long rows and find these very good. With our low water pressure they can be left on for long periods without over-watering and the water gets straight down to the roots.

PS Don't like rain very much as it means I have to get on with all those indoor jobs that I've been putting off for so long! Just finished fixing the leaking bathroom tap!

What do you know? I was just going to start a thread on the lak of rain, and here's one up and running already... Here in SW Kent we've had about half an inch of rain in the last three weeks. I know the right thing to do is to water when the plants need it, even if the forecasters say it will bucket tomorrow. The frustrating thing is that the forecasters keep saying we'll get rain, and it comes to nothing. I can forgive them that - I know it's difficult. What I find hard to understand is that on theBBC website I can get a five-day forecast for my postal area, plus a weather map of the SE which can be advanced to show the forecasts, and they often totally disagree with each other.

It has been raining here almost non stop for the last 24hours so I hope that by now both you and Compo have had your share.
It is now too wet to work the plot so hence my postings at this time of day.

Dear All,
since April 1st we have had a grand total of 5mm of rain here in Cambridge. So I think it must have been my prayer mat involved. Strictly speaking the garden kneeler, those weeds just won't come out when it is so dry.

It's been pouring all day today,good for the spuds but alas there's a limit to how many times i can reorganise the greenhouse so given the forecast it's the dreaded ironing tomorrow

Hello each. It's been very dry here too. It's looked like rain a few times but not come to much. Our allotment is crying out for some rain and we have been watering regularly for weeks. It rained during the night but nothing substantial and my husband says it really hasn't wet the soil. I daren't wish for rain, as Hull was very badly affected by the June 2007 flooding. Sorry, Compo, I can't help re. your pond. I would think your assumptions are correct though. Cheers!
