I have been reading about rationing and food policy during and after World War 2. I can remember a lot of it from my earliest years - brings back unhappy memories of concentrated orange juice and free cod-liver oil :(
But, as is well known, my generation came out of the privations of the forties and early fifties fitter and healthier than any previous generation - and probably subsequent ones too.
In these straightened times I wonder if we have lessons to learn from even darker times.
To whet your appetites, here is the original recipe for the (in)famous Lord Woolton Pie which was promoted by the government as wholesome fare.

Hi OH,
Been there before and no thank you.
The worse things were POM and DEHYDRATED CABBAGE and SPAM!
To think that SPAM is actually being eaten from choice nowadays beggars belief! During the war it was known as 'PINK LINT'.
Going to school on my bike dodging the bomb craters was about as exciting as it got in those days!
Very unhappy memories.
JB.

Have you seen the price of Spam ? It's revolting stuff. The tv ad has to be joking...I would never forgive my husband if he prepared me a meal which included Spam. ugh!
Happy with my lot

Hmmm Spam Fritters! Shudder! - we used to have spam covered in batter when I was a girl - these probably led to the invention of the frisbie.

This is a new one on me. Wartime associations aside it reads like a basic suggestion for a pie for vegetarians - must try it :)
