I have been reading about rationing and food policy during and after World War 2. I can remember a lot of it from my earliest years - brings back unhappy memories of concentrated orange juice and free cod-liver oil
But, as is well known, my generation came out of the privations of the forties and early fifties fitter and healthier than any previous generation - and probably subsequent ones too.
In these straightened times I wonder if we have lessons to learn from even darker times.
To whet your appetites, here is the original recipe for the (in)famous Lord Woolton Pie which was promoted by the government as wholesome fare.
