Well for all I know they have been around for ages, but as I trudged back from the allotment on Wednesday night as the sky was getting dark, there was definitely a bat flitting back and forth against the darkening sky.
For me, that's at least one sign that Summer can't be far behind!

Our local bats were out last week too. I haven't seen them yet this weekend though.

I have a pond in my garden and our bats have been here for nearly 3 weeks

I have a spot light on it and sometimes we switch it on to get a better view of them

We saw the first bats in March, most likely pipistrelles. Then there was a gap when it was very windy and cool, now they are out again. I often wonder whether the bats really go back to hibernate when the spring weather turns cold? We have in the past seen them flying during the day (around noon!) in really cool summer weather. Apparently, they do that when they have to feed young and there aren't enough insects about during dusk and dawn.

our bast - pipistrelles - nest in the local trees. Active since March. Lots of them as we have marshy ground in the adjacent fields so LOTS of insects..
