I think this is a really great initiative and hopefully will encourage a lot more people to grow their own veg, especially children.

I liked the idea and have sent for free seeds - I'd thought of trying Hunter Butternut but hadn't got round to buying any, not sure I can cope with yet another free packet of Gardeners Delight. Like so much TV now though the end result was disjointed and scrappy. I think all these Media Studies graduates there are about these days that would not have got into higher education in more sensible times have some sort inability to focus attention and produce programmes with solid content, how many times were those pansies watered for example. Toby told us to plan and be tidy but what he did was neither.

To be honest I have given up on GW.
It has now fallen to the short span of attention, make it easy brigade.

We never missed a GW programme for years but now we probably wont be watching it after the first one this year was, like you say Geoff, very scrappy and disjointed. We still have part of the second programme to watch but if the first one and a half are anything to go by then we will not be watching the next 22 programmes. Dont like the new place they have now moved to either. Gosh I sound like a grumpy old woman

I find GW very contrived and condescending nowadays. All a bit stage managed for my liking. The relaxed, laid back attitude of Monty made it a pleasure to watch. Whereas the new guy just seems smug. Shame really because being fairly new I am always eager to learn and get pointers from the experts but I now find them annoying.

I may too sound like a grumpy old man but let's be honest the program now seems geared towards to a rather different audience (have deleted my Sky series record as I won't be missing much).

However, my good lady bought me Carol's veg gardening book and that is excellent. Well sectioned with just what you need to know about each bit of veg. Not a great index but that can be overlooked.

I also find the format very scrappy, jumping about everywhere and giving snippets of this and that.

The presenters know their stuff, I think it is the producers who need shaking up. I sometimes wonder what audience they think they are aiming at. If it is people new to gardening they aren't doing them any favours by putting on this jumble. It would be nice if they could put on an "advanced" gardening programme (on seconds thoughts probably not).

Now where did i put that massive envelope.

I'll carry on watching GW whilst Toby and Alys are on. Like both of them.

It seems from last weeks GW that Alys's local pub is the Hare and Hounds in King's Heath (beautiful original 1904 decor). If she likes the same music as us (unlikely!) we may see her at the gig there on Friday....

Dear Pongeroon, if you do see Alys there, please tell her she is more than welcome to have my autograph, for a small fee of course.

Anybody else send for the free seeds? Anybody received any?

I applied for the seeds - went online as soon as the programme had finished but haven't received any so assume I was probably one of the unlucky ones.

i applied online before the programmes transmission and mine arrived a couple of days ago.am i wrong in thinking butternut squash was a poor choice for beginners ? i know they're easy to grow but the people they're trying to encourage are new gardeners and will most probably have limited space, perhaps a compact courgette would have been better....mmm just reminded of roast garlic and courgette soup yum!!

I sent for mine straight away on line and have had a letter saying they've all gone.

As for the butternut squash question, I was surprised they were included in a beginners' pack as they aren't one of the easier squashes to grow, even if they have the space.
