Raspberries in pots

Hi all,
I've just been to do a bit of shopping this morning and have ended up buying 3 raspberry canes (one of those moments of weakness

) without any thought as to what i was going to do with them when i got home

. At the front of the house i have a reasonably large patio area which i was going to put some very large pots. Could i grow the raspberry canes in pots? If so how many to a pot? What type of support do they need? Also the variety i got was turineen (i think). Are they self fertile or will i have to get a diferent variety to cross polinate?
Sorry for all the questions it's just that i've never ventured into the world of fruit growing before but have only ever grown veg.
Thanks
Smurfy

Hi Smurfy
I hate to see an unanswered question
I have never seen raspberries grown in containers. They have a very extensive root system, so really need ground. They would need a large container and a lot of regular watering, I suspect. And I doubt if you would get much of a crop. Perhaps someone else has some experience of growing in containers.

Until now, I'd say the same. However, yesterday I visited a garden that had everything grown in a pot. Raspberries, currants, gooseberries, potatoes, anything.

Hi Tigger,
At this time of the year you are not able to assess the outcome of growing in pots. If you were to go back at fruit picking time then you would be able to make a true comparison.
Of course you can grow anything in a pot but whether the final outcome is worth it you cannot tell at this end of the season.

Tigger, I'll bet they were just bare-root stock shoved in pots with compost.

Potted up some raspberries from my plot which were surplus to requirements, put them on the bench (where all spare plants are left) outside the allotment trading shed and, needless to say, they didn"t stay there very long

Hmmnnn. The gentleman concerned grows everything in pots, from potatoes to vines and fruit trees. His garden is immaculate and very productive. He gardens on a slope and it was the only way he could make it workable as he got older. The entire plot is covered in weed suppressant fabric and the pots are sunk into holes, then the top is mulched to make it look more attractive.

Hi Tigger,
Perhaps I should take this growing in pots more seriously. Do you really mean pots or are they tubs?
