I have been using peat-free compost for just over a year with good results. Over the same period, I have been seeing thrips (or whatever those annoying tiny flying black insects are called) around my potted plants and seedlings. I have recently sorted the problem by using stickers that attract and trap the little beasties. These seems to work a treat. It wasn't a huge issue but I found it quite annoying.

So, does anyone know if the thrips are connected to the peat-free compost or if it is just a coincidence?

ello FlowerPowerGirl. I had the same problem last year in one of my greenhoses, on the pepper plants. I used those stickers too but there were still lots of them. They are Sciarid flies and it's usually a sign that the compost is too damp. I let the compost dry more inbetween waterings and it improved the situation. Make sure you remove any dead leaves and debris from the compost as their larvae feed on this. Hope this helps. Cheers.

Thanks Elaine. The little critters seemed to be more prevalent when the compost was dry but perhaps they were more active or noticeable then. I will take your advice though and ensure that the compost never gets too damp. Cheers.
