Am I too late to start a bean trench - and is it necessary? I am not planning on growing runner beans as they are not my favourite - and anyway everyone always seems to have millions to give away round here :!:

But I will be growing climbing french beans - blauhilde, blue lake, cobra and hilda, along with some borlotti beans. I will probably be growing them up wigwams so I would be digging more of a pit than a trench.

I'll also be growing a few dwarf french beans - Helios and Tendergreen.

Dear Anne, French beans are not heavy feeders like Runner beans, so theres no need to do a bean trench.
Even if you do, i wouldn't use manure as they don't really appreciate it.
They do like a plot of ground that was manured for a previous crop though.

Thank you OH. They'll be going on ground that was manured for potatoes last year so should be fine.

Saves me one job anyway :D

mmm I was going to put mine in ground that I put mushroom compost on in the autumn...willl that be ok. regards Penny
So far the only thing that's green on my allotment is me.
