I'm using fresh onion seed whats the best way of germinating them so far only 75% of them germinated.i don't have a propagator i usually get all my vegetables germinated in the hot press .i ran the supplier they said to soak the seeds in water for 24 hours before sowing. but i never heard this before what do you think

Hi Nemo
75% doesn't seem like a bad germination, I sowed some mammoth onions and had 3 out of 48 sowed in individual cells and watered in, in a heated propagator.

I soak my bigger seeds (pumpkin. marrow, courgette etc) for 24 hours but i would have thought onion seeds would be too fiddly once soaked.
75% doesn't seem a bad germination rate though, i wish everything i planted came through at that rate

I soaked my onion seeds overnight before planting them just over a week ago, and yes, they were very fiddly once wet!
Unfortunately I put them in the greenhouse, and when we had the jet stream come through Friday night and demolish the greenhouse, the whole lot got dumped on the ground. Oh well, start again

You have my sympathies goldilox. I lost all my plants 2 years ago in the floods that hit Sheffield. Let us know how you get on with the insurance company. Our experience was that they took forever because of the extra claims but they did eventually pay.
