National Trust - allotments

I read in the paper yesterday that the National Trust are planning to make land available in many of their properties for conversion into allotments so that local people can grow their own fruit and veg. Now that there is now a long waiting list for allotments in some areas, I think this is an excellent initiative, but hope they will get the project off the ground quickly so that people can take reserve them soon and take advantage of a full growing season. I wonder what the plot rental fees will be though and whether they will be more expensive than those rented out by local councils.

Sorry Chantal, I missed your post and posted this link again. I think it's an excellent idea from the National Trust. With over 100,000 people apparently on the waiting list for allotments and some councils very short of suitable land, this will hopefully open up more opportunities for people to start growing their own veg. I hope they don't start putting too many "National Trust-type" restrictions on the land, like no sheds, etc. I suspect they'll probably have some fairly strict protocols for their tenants.

No worries, I've merged them so there's just one topic now.
I've never done that before

Sounds good but how many properties are near enough to a significant population to be any use?

I'll take a quarter of this
one.
Plus a licence to cull Muntjac.

I suspect that anybody having one of these NT allotments will find that security is possibly higher than on some other plots and that it won't be so easy for vandals and thieves to get onto them and wreck them. I agree that they may not be conveniently sited for some local populations but still think it's a good idea.

I agree with Geoff, can't be many near enough to travel to.
