As we move closer to the shortest day, it's nice to know that after today it doesn't get darker any earlier in the afternoon - here 16.03 sunset today, then 16.02 every day for nine or ten days before sunset starts getting later. Pity about the mornings though

Dear Alan, thats very interesting, and something i didn't know.
And there was me thinking i knew everything.

When you have hens and ducks to put to bed every day it's something you notice
As for the mornings, things don't start getting better (lighter) until early January.

My son told me about the shortening of the day length a couple of years ago. I must say I hadn't really noticed a difference between morning and afternoon until he said.
The hens were in bed at 3.30 this afternoon as it was dark and pouring with rain. They've managed to lay two eggs though - not bad for 6 layers and 1 retired.

I always say that the 21st is the day it all starts going uphill again, but I am aware of the idiosyncracies of the planet's orbit, really I don't think we notice a big change until mid-late january but it is a psychological boon .........I agree.........

Evening All,
With regard to different day lengths when I was on the ships and sailing into Jacksonville in America with cars from Japan,we had the locals in one of the bars convinced that in BST we had EIGHT days in a week.
The eighth day was called "Blunday" and came between Monday and Tuesday.
We explained it away by saying that we had to have the extra day in summer to harvest our crops owing to the possibility of bad weather
We owned up to the truth before we sailed,a good con whilst it lasted.

Well, here we are at last. Sunrise tomorrow is a minute earlier than it has been for a week and a half.
Now what will I do with the extra minute?
