Leeks

Can't identify that mould? Got a great tip for keeping slugs at bay? Suggestions for organic weed control? Post them here...

This is really a follow up to Sylvie's post of a few weeks back, but I've just lifted my first leeks (Musselburgh) to make some soup. As a whole they've grown the best ever, but a few of them, though big and strong looking, have started to rot at the roots. I expect this in Febraury after a wet winter, but October....? :(

JN,
Had one in this seasons' Musselburgh out of a 14 plant initial picking.
I wonder if it is linked to the Aminopyralid prob. The plants were dibbed into the bed which had a liberal rotovated 'dose' of this (as I found out later)contaminated manure. I trust that getting the stuff in the soil will only be a minor problem.

All my leeks have got rust, I lifted about a doz. yesterday and they all are affected, Autumn Giant, there is about another 2 doz. in the ground I expect I will have to dump them or can they be used in soup?

You will probably find that after a couple of heavy frosts the rust marks will disappear. The stems of the leeks will be perfectly O.K. to harvest.
