I've just been browsing through my new T&M 2009 catalogue and they are selling seeds for Banana Shallots!

Dear Chantal, having never grown these myself, are they really as good as people make out.

Dunno, I couldn't get the damn things to germinate and gave them away to Colin

who I believe has had great success with them.

Both yours, Piglets and seeds from earlier ones of mine have grown ok in recent years.
To answer OH, when they do well, they give you a lot of shallot to cook with. However they seem to need more care & attention than normal sets of long shallots. These don't produce as big bulbs, but take less effort, seem more reliable and produce more bulbs for the space involved.
Banana shallots seem more widely available in the shops round here nowadays.
