Dear Shallot Man, i not only find signs like that absolutely ridiculous, but it is also sad that we are having to do such things.

You'd be surprised how much trouble gates can cause postmen.
I've worked for Royal Mail as a postwoman and a manager and gates can be a challenge!
While delivering I once pushed a gate to open it , but it was only attached by the bottom hinge so as the bottom of the gate hit me in the shins, knocking my feet from under me, I slowly fell forward with the top part of the gate. I ended up laid over the gate on the path with the letters in one hand and the postbag still on my back. You know the "I hope no one is looking moment".
Another instance, an angry customer phoned up to ask why he hadn't had any post. It turned out that he was tired of the paper boy leaving the gate open and so had nailed it shut and thought the postman should either climb over the gate or over the wall from next door!
