Saving shallots

I have just harvested a fairly decent crop of shallots and thought I might save some to plant next year. I was going to pick out some nice big ones, thinking that like produces like. But Joy Larcom in "Grow your own Vegetables" recommends 1-1.5 cm, which seem quite small and scrawny to me.
Any thoughts?

Plant the best, eat the rest is what I have been recomended to do.

My old vegetable gardening book says: Big shallots will make a lot of small ones, small shallots a few big ones. Try both to see if it is correct.

Hi Binky,
For the very first time I disagree with Joy Larcom.
For many years I sustained an unknown breed of Shallot which had been in my family for more than a century by viewing the crop and selecting
'Mr Average'. I think that 1-1.5cm is far too small.
It is quite easy to grade the crop. The ones that I used to select for growing were roughly 1" which is 2.5cm and the results from those always gave a very good and well sized result.
Due to illness one year, the shallots and everything else didn't get planted and that was the end of the line 1860-1995 and I have yet to find a shallot that comes anywhere near to them.
