I received some carlingford DT Brown new potatoes actuall Dobies today, they look pretty healthy but am keen to get them in the ground as soon as is possible. Given the differing view on whether to chit potatoes out or not, what do people think, straight in the ground? Or Chit for a couple of weeks, when it will then be August?

Morning Compo, i would just get them in and let nature do the rest.

Hi Compo, i would put them straight in the garden now,but keep your eye on them, as the experience i had over the last two years they soon got the blight.
I notice Marshalls do'nt have them in there catolgue this year i dont know if that is the reason why.

Compo, I believe the idea of chitting potatoes is to mimic the much warmer conditions in their native country earlier in the year. At this time of year the soil in Britain is warm enough for the spuds not to rot or be held back by low temperatures. So bung them in and expect a good crop, given the rain we've been having.

Hi Compo!
Ihave just received a plant catalogue (Friday) from Fothergills.
On the back page it is offering "LATE CROPPING" new potatoes, with last orders 15th August, 10 tubers for a fiver!
Namely, Pixie, Carlingford,Nicola, Charlotte and Maris Peer.
So it would appear that they do not think it is too late to plant.
That is if you are a rich man !!!!!

I bought two lots in Spring, planted one lot & put the others in the fridge. As I lifted the first ones I planted the ones from the fridge & am just about to try the first of these today. They are at different stages of growth planted in sequence so will keep me going well into autumn.
