I thought stores such as Lidls were supposed to be cheaper. I've just paid £1.68 for 2 kgs. of sugar as opposed to £1.65 in Waitrose last week. Not much 3p but when I shall be buying in excess of 40 or 50 lb this season for jam and chutney I shall stick to the tried and trusted Waitrose.

Dear Beryl, i do think Waitroses take a lot of beating, and if one has to start driving to two or three different shops, one soon loses any gain in fuel costs.

Dear Beryl, i paid three pound fifty three for 5 kilos at sainsburys on saturday.

That's even better OC but I don't have a Sainsbury in Gosport, Fareham being the nearest and like OH says would cost more in petrol but if I am in Fareham will call in. Thanks.
I just object to all these claims people are defecting to the cheaper stores and then find I had to pay more. Are they jumping in on the band wagon I wonder?

all the supermarket chains are buying in the same market, they all must have similar overheads, so must have an overall similar cost base. they slash the price on a few publisised items to get people through the door, but on a a 100 quid mixed trolley full you wont find a hell of a lot of difference. gone are the days when an aunt of mine spent one morning a week wandering up the high street pricing her shopping list in each supermarket then going back to buy each item in the cheapest place.
i must admit to buying extra when stuff is on offer, we have a lot of prawns in the freezer that were on half price locally for a few weeks, they did the same thing with nz lamb for a time but weve eaten all that now....

Just back from my 10 dayish shop and my arse nearly fell out.......£85 spent.......just like that.....only got what was on my list and nothing more........

I did get my meat from a local source today so I will see what it's like before I go and order a sheep and a pig off them. It's an urban farm that is used to teach people with learning disabilities animal husbandry and the growing of vegetables. I'd rather give my cash to them than the bloody rip off supermarkets...the thieving bunch of bankers

I agree Lizzie. I spent a lot of money doing the weekly shop at Tesco yesterday (and I mean a LOT of money!) I was shocked by the quality, especially the fruit and veg - the grapes were brown and the brocolli was yellow. Also, anything on special offer was sold out. I popped into my local farm shop on the way home, and what a difference! Personal service, good quality, and I even got a discount of over £4 on a joint of meat! I'll be going there first in future, as they deserve my money much more then Tesco.
