Hi Everyone

Off to Cornwall this weekend Newquay (no I will not be surfing) I will be taking the scenic route (A49) down to Bristol then the M5 and A30, Does anyone have any local knowledge of any holdups along this route I would be most grateful for any help

No idea about the traffic but if you're feeling flush, have breakfast at JO's Fifteen at Watergate Bay.

You can't book 'cos it's first come, first served. All organic, locally produced food, homemade breads and jams. Doesn't look a lot when your plate arrives but it's such good quality. Took me straight back to my dad's Sunday breakfasts when we were kids.

There used to be holdups at the Jamaica Inn on the A30, in the smuggling days.

during peak times the m5 over the avonmouth bridge can be a nightmare but its usually clear by weston super mud, try and avoid the bristol area at going home time on friday.

I agree with Richard about the M5 around Bristol - you can get into some really serious congestion around here, especially on a holiday weekend. Unfortunately there is no easy way of avoiding it except to make your journey so that you avoid the busiest times.

I seem to remember that the A49 is generally a quiet road and you should make good time unfortunately it has hardly any 'comfort stops' - some beautiful scenery on it though.
As you're on the scenic route, if you have time try going down the A466 from Monmouth through Tintern to Chepstow and over the old Severn Bridge to get to the M5. This is a superb stretch of road down through the Wye Valley past Tintern Abbey. The old Severn Bridge has excellent views over the estuary unlike the new bridge which has road fencing designed to make drivers keep their eyes on the road!

Richard yes it can be a nightmare, but, If I am going over the Avonmouth bridge at going home time then I am in big trouble I will hopefully want to be passed it after dinner

John As you say the A49 is quite run with no comfort stop but it beats belting down the Motorways Yes I do take the A466 to Monmouth passing Tintern and then on to Bristol After crossing the old Bridge We stop at the first services after the bridge Junction 1 M48 which is a good one, quite & clean When leaving the services I join the A403(Bristols Dock Road) to Avonmouth and join the M5 at junction 18 then its a stright run to Exeter and the A30

Hi Kevin,
On the A49 a mile or so after the turning for Leominster comes Hope under Dinmore. At the top of the hill is Queenswood Arboretum which have loos and a small cafe to take-in the next outlet!
If it is at nighttime the cafe and loos will be closed but take the following directions: walk behind the buildings into the trees and ......
