The wonders of chickweed

Last year I was unable to spend as much time on the allotment as usual and as a result one of my beds become completely covered in chickweed. When I finally got round to weeding the result was a wonderfully textured soil underneath. Although prolific, chickweed doesn't appear to do much harm to the plants and if it saves me the trouble of digging I'm all for it.

If you get to it before it seeds cover it over as a green manure.I have an inherited problem of annual mercury on my plot and that works well as a green manure..but don't let it seed!

Chickens go mad for it - hence the name I suppose.
