Hi Ian,
Scroll down a couple to Spring Hero and you get John and Geoff's super advice.
It is still a viable proposition to sow Carrots like Autumn King 2 until the middle of August. They will supply you with plenty of thinning's leaving a storable crop for the winter.

When do the Calabrese Marathon head up?
Which variety of quick heading Calabrese do you grow?
I grow the original Italian Green Calabrese which for me heads up in July and the other, who's name I cannot call to mind at present, heads up in late August.

thanks for the ideas, i have limited undercover growing facilities until middle of July. Have a small Patio yard to grow in and the wife has kindly got hold of a small 6' x 4' greenhouse for Mid July to place in the yard.
I have half a dozen trough style pots growing various herbs and soft fruits in.
Next on the agenda which will be done in mid july due to work commitments is two 1m X 2m raised by 60cm growing beds to be made.
Next question would be is it to late in Mid July to start some Potatos off?
What type would be suitable?
I mainly bake, roast or mash the potatos.

Want to see how well they would grow in a raised bed. Would mix in with an early type of carrot, the short round type to keep the children entertained.

Will try someones suggestion of Parsnip germination and see how they fair as well.

Second raised bed would probably
consist of mixed salad and radish keeping the troughs for the herbs as easier to manage that way.

Will see i can anything to grow out of my childrens ear at this rate!!!!

JB : Both the late Calabrese sowings are experimental based on what it says on the packets.
Marathon I have grown successfully for a few years and have two ages of plants in at the moment, 16th March sowing just showing about 1½" diameter heads and 4th May sowing to follow on. The packet says "Sow March - July. A late variety with dense heads which hold well can be used for Summer and Autumn crops" so I am trying July sowing.
I have some Sakura from 14th April also which should come in between. Also sowed Romanesco on 4th May that I haven't grown before.
The other one is "Quick Heading Calabrese or Broccoli" from The Real Seed Catalogue described as "An unusual, quick maturing strain, with small heads ready 60 days from transplant. Can be useful for getting in an extra crop at any part of the season. Sow thinly in April/May ....As long as the winter is not too severe, it can be sown in late August or September in an unheated greenhouse or polytunnel, to give you a very early crop at the start of the following year. You can also sow it from mid-March for an early crop of small heads in May/June". I sowed it with the Marathon on 16th March and we have eaten some and have some nice heads about ready, it looks like it is slightly variable which is a bonus. Should have said I was going to protect the later sowing.
I am trying very hard to be disciplined this year (like I suggested to somebody trying to plan succession) by using 12 cell modules, potting up the 12 seedlings into 3" then planting out 9 of most things. I am growing 20 odd varieties of Brassicas and trying not to run out of space.

Yes, carrots are a good idea.

Last week i sowed into modules seeds of Purple Cape cauli, Falstaff Brussels Sprouts, Purple sprouting brocc, a whitse cauli called "Maystar" and some White sprouting brocc. I intend to sow some more caulis and Sprouts "Darkmar" next week. They'll all get planted out onthe allotment during August, when I have finally got round to clearing the broad beans and a messy patch of ground which was sown with clover in the spring.
