Hi all,

It must have rained all night Wednesday, as this morning all the water butts were full up to the brim again It's been raining on and off all day today, but it is quite nice and bright now. I had planted out lots of Leeks, and thinned out the Carrots yesterday evening, so the rain was quite a welcome sight. Anyone else had much rain lately?

Seem to remember some early last month.

Dear PJ, we had a fair drop of rain last night.
I found this quite amusing, as old codger was watering his allotment earlier in the evening.

We've not had any rain since a week last Monday. Before that it did not rain from the beginning of May. I am getting worried. We go on holiday a week on Sunday for one week and I am worried that my mother in law will find it a problem watering both the plot and our garden at home.

Never known it so dry for a very long time.

Someone my OH knows was in Kilnsey yesterday morning and they had about and hour of light rain.

It is also colder tonight it was 8.9 in our garden last night and it is 12.8 now. I have closed the polytunnel doors tonight.

I suppose we'll all be moaning in about a month because of all the rain!!
I'm lucky when I go on holiday, as my next door neighbour looks after the garden and greenhouse for me. Did you get that link the other day?

Still not had any useful rain - 1mm last night but everything is bone dry again today. Husband has rigged up a brill contraption on the allotment, though: rather than having to carry watering cans down a steep and winding grasspath from the dipping trough at the top of the site, we bought a 50m hose, insert it in the trough at the top and let the water run down on its own into the watering cans and butts on our allotment! It's not fast but saves us a h*** of a lot of work. So, guess what I'll be doing all day tomorrow?

No rain forecast for us until the end of next week! I think it's the whole of northwest England that's been so dry for the last 7 weeks.

That's a great idea with the hose When was the last time you had a long dry spell like this then?

Hello, PJ, I couldn't pinpoint exactly when we had a long dry spell like this but I certainly cannot remember one at this time of the year. We always collect the water off the shed roof in three 50 gallon drums and use this water to start plants off in spring and this year is the first time that we have completely run out in more than 20 years on this allotment. The annoying thing is that just east of us there have been lots of showers but not here and, I believe, west of us (Catherine and Geoff would be able to confirm that).

Let's hope you get some rain soon then, otherwise that hose will be getting overworked.

We had some rain overnight, though not enough, after a long dry spell!
The wind has been the problem, it dries the surface out quickly.

I too watered, with the hose last evening, as rain was forcast and I wanted the rain to soak into the soil, not just lie on top!

But all the plants have perked up, all the watering I do never has the same effect as a little rain from heaven!

Hi Monika. We had a few drops of rain last night but nothing otherwise. We have now had no rain since week last Monday. Then it was only that light soft rain We really need some more rain. The only proper rain was at the first week inMay.

We had a drought in the summer of 1996 but as Monika says much later. Our shared spring failed and we put in a borehole but we bought water first starting on 14th August.
The grass outside our back door (can't call it lawn) is based on a filled in slurry pit and we can see the outline again - Time Team wouldn't need geophysics!
Still fine and sunny today.
