Celery or celeriac?

I went to a local plant sale and bought what I thought was a nice pot of flat leaved parsley. When I got home my OH looked puzzled and said - They`re celery seedlings you ninny -.
Oh - well, the leaves certainly taste of celery but what if they`re celeriac?
I`ve potted them on and they look good - but when will I be able to tell the difference?

I'm not a celery growing expert and last year grew celeriac for the first time, only moderately successfully. I found that a fair proportion the plants didn't bulb up, throwing up lots of upward stumpy stalks which made them look very like celery. It was only around Winter (January time) that there was enough of a bulb to differentiate between celery and celeriac. But I agree with you, the small seedlings look very like flat leaved parsley and if the label has been removed in the garden centre it's only by tasting that you'd probably be able to tell the difference. So just keep watering and hopefully eventually bulbs will start to bulk up.

Its getting a bit late for celeriac seedlings, they should have been about 3-5" in 3" pots by now but you may be lucky. As the bulbs form remove the lower leaves to encourage the bulb to fill out. They won't grow much more after about October so you need a good size bulb to stand the winter.
