I've lost about 10 newly transplanted tomato plants in the last few days. The tops have been nipped off and in most cases left in the pot. The only type affected has been the Monte Carlo, even though there's another four sorts to choose from; and the plants taken are often surrounded by untouched plants.

I've seen no evidence of either mice or slugs/snails. Ideas anyone?

I had similar happen to me, mouse traps out I am afraid.

I've been looking on the RHS website in order to identify a little caterpillar-like grub we've found responsible for this type of damage, but to no avail. The grub is about 1/2" long, fawnish/brown coloured. It does seem to be nocturnal. Any help from anyone else in identifying the grub would be appreciated.

The only suggestion I could get from the RHS site was that it could possibly be wood lice?

Thanks both. I'll dig out the mouse traps and see what happens tomorrow. If that fails I have a grub around (ooh sorry) and see what I can find in the pots.
