Womble Weed

This is the weed that's been giving me all the trouble, it goes underground, overground and wombling free.

I've been told it's

a) wild sorrel (doesn't taste like sorrel)

b) a type of knotweed.

Any ideas anyone?

The roots are yellowish and very strong, which does make it easier to pull up.

Flowers are pink and once the seeds are ripe, they shower everywhere.

This is the area of the main invasion. I'd hoed a lot of it off last year as my cabbages were on here, but this spring it turned into a nice green carpet.

I've gone through every handful of soil and so far taken out 13 sacks of weeds and roots. I'm now working my way around the plot nabbing the smaller infestations before they spread.

I still have to dig the main area over again to look for more roots before I plant it up.

Looks very like Rumex acetosella otherwise known as sheep's sorrel - so your informant was correct. It grows wild in profusion round here - called Suran yr ŷd = Corn sorrel.

Yay, that's the little sucker!

Thanks for identifying it Alan, although I still hate it as much as ever.

I'll still think of it as Womble weed though which is bad as when I'm pulling it up I keep singing the Wombles back catalogue to myself...

Remember you're a Womble! 8)

Why should I suffer alone?

I've also been singing the Wombling Song and Exercise is Good for you, Laziness is Not, by Madame Cholet
