Companion Planting

Hi,

I'm trying to plan out my veg planting in my garden for this year. I don't have a large garden but have managed to find 3 small patches. I want to keep it simple, but don't really know what can be planted with what to make maximum use of my space. I know I can plant carrots in between rows of onions to help keep carrotfly at bay, buyt what else can I plant between other things to help and to save space?

Any and all tips will be very gratefully received.

As a general rule, plant things that grow up (lettuces, spinach, chard, peas, beans) between things that grow down (carrots, radish, beetroot, kohlrabi). Keep them in straight rows or they'll be difficult to weed.

You could look at the deep bed method (no dig and plant closely) and adapt it to fit your plots so you don't disturb the roots of one crop as you weed or harvest another.

Lettuces and quick growing salad plants are useful to plant in the spaces between brassicas as they will have been eaten before the brassicas get large.
