For the last week or so something has been digging around in the same patch of onions - right in the middle of about 200 onions. They weren't eaten, just left lying around. I kept re-planting and they kept being dug up again. Same place, and the soil ended up as a really good tilth! We didn't know what it was and suspected squirrels but this morning there was a seriously good rabbit hole heading down right through the middle of the onions!
If we dig the burrow out I'll have to dig out masses of onions and they're doing really well. I can't believe it!
Last time something similar happened I trod down on the burrow, unsuspecting, and as my foot sank in, a rabbit shot out straight into the jaws of our cat who promptly ate it. Unfortunately the cat died last summer. Any ideas?

But Chantal, can you get your mouth that close to the ground?
More seriously, know anyone who ferrets?

Thank you, Chantal and Peter. I'll try the cat impersonation tonight. And no, I don't know any ferreters.
When I looked yesterday evening the hole had been filled in. We're not overrun with neighbours so I doubt it was human intervention. This morning the hole was there again. And before there are any more smart comments - no, I hadn't been drinking, and my husband was there on both occasions and can confirm it. Baffling.

Dear Granny, Doe rabbits often backfil their burrows when they have gone off feeding and there are young ones in the burrow.

Thanks, OH, I didn't know that.
The cat impersonations didn't work, though! I'll have to try something else.

A long stick, used vigorously.

Yesterday evening the sun was shining directly into the rabbit burrow and we could see a baby rabbit in there, washing and twitching its nose and generally doing rabbity things. So I'm afraid, Peter, that I can't take up your helpful suggestions. I may even grow an extra row of lettuces....
