Why haven't my pink fir apple potatoes chitted? the other 4 varieties all chitted but not one of the PFA, the 5 varieties were all laid out on the same day 4/2/08 on the same bench, will it be worth planting them?.

Dear Bren, Pink Fir Apple potato seed are always very slow to show any sign of chitting.
But you can plant them just the way they are and they will be fine.
Infact, there is rumour that maincrop potatoes yeild higher if not chitted.

OH is right, I have grown PFAs for many years and have never managed to chit one of them.

Thanks both OH and Chantil for that answer, I would have hated to loose my salad potatoes, we lost all the Rattie potatoes last year to the blight, I will get my son down again to plant them for me next weekend>

I'm with OH and Chantal. When I first grew PFA I thought they would never sprout. If you waited till they had good sprouts you wouldn't be planting till late May, and they are a slow growing variety at that. Here in the blight-ridden west they just don't succeed and I stopped growing them when I moved here.

I am with Alan. I also had trouble with PFA sprouting when I first grew them,I now slap them in as normal, not sprouting does not seem to affect them. shallotman
