Hello everyone,
I have read recently that rabbit droppings should be treated like cat or dog and not put on the compost heap. Does anyone know why this is? I have been putting mine on the compost heap for years, and using the compost on my veg, and am now a bit worried. I hope someone can advise.

Hi Sarah,
I am afraid that the person who said you cannot use Rabbit dropping on a compost is very wrong. Rabbit pellets, as they were known as before pelleted food was invented, are wonderful for attracting worms into the heap. The more the merrier I say.

Thank you, that's a relief. I couldn't understand it as obviously the rabbit is veggie, but our local council also won't accept rabbit droppings in the green garden waste bins. I'm not sure why, although they mentioned health and safety!
Hi Sarah,
Animal waste, manure, is now classified as hazardous waste and must be disposed of under licence but I would have thought the council would be able to use Rabbit pellets but obviously with all councils they have to act according to the law however stupid the law is. The trouble is these laws are couched in terms that means size of animal is no excuse.
The health and safety bit would be for their council workers having to maybe handle things.
But rest assured that your Rabbit droppings will become fine compost in due course.
