Just opened my copy of the April TKG to see Derris is now to be withdrawn.
I rarely use pesticides these days but have always relied on Derris dust to control cabbage root fly on all brassicas.
I know I could use collars but why are us home gardeners always the ones to suffer.
Beryl.

Hi Beryl,
Thank the Soil Association as they have been lobbying to have it banned along with every other control in the home gardeners armoury.
They are trying to convert the country to organics by stealth. The government that is dealing with this are past masters at stealth!

Alan - don't mention EUROPE !! I'm still outraged at not getting the Referendum we were promised.
And politicians wonder why they're regarded as one of the lowest forms of animal life.

That's a shame. I've found Derris to be one of the few food-friendly products that dealt with aphids effectively. Looks like this is our last chance to buy this. It still seems to be available here at the moment.
I've also tried Derris dust but found it harder to control than the liquid version (seems to blow everywhere and not stay on the plants well unless you wet them first).
This Spring, I've bought some Aphidoletes, as in the past the grubs of ladybirds & lacewings seemed very good at clearing aphids. However there never seem to be sufficient numbers in Spring, when the initial infestations arrive. However it should be said that Aphidoletes aren't particularly cheap.

I use derris liquid now and again on the brassicas, the fruit trees and spuds. I've always found it effective. I'm annoyed that this is being taken off the market.
The stores in the lottie still have a stock so I will have to stock up a bit for future use.
I, as a British citizen, am starting to get pretty fed up at being treated like a no-brain piece of pond life by Brussels and this government. We are getting treated as though we do not possess reasonable thought processes and are unable to understand even basic principles. It seems to be another prod at my freedom of choice which I can't abide.
Anyone fancy joining me in a revolution?

I am afraid your remark about a revolution may be a little nearer the mark than you anticipated.
Its going to take one to sort this Country out at this rate

I think it may be Weed. I'm getting more and more disillusioned as I get older. No wonder so many people are emigrating to other countries. Can't say that I blame them.
The worm will turn one day because ordinary people will reach the end of their tethers. We seem to be patronised and belittled at every turn.
Maybe the revolution has already began. More and more people are shunning supermarkets and going to farm shops or farmers markets, people are fighting back with the financial institutions, are more informed than the authorities would like us to be and using the information to get what we want.
I know that, when dealing with insurance companies, I always where their call centres are based. If it's abroad, they lose my business. More and more of us are voting with our pockets.
I would love to see the return of a proper High Street with a butcher, baker, fishmonger and veg shop. Maybe, one day, it will happen.

I don't know whether it's because we're all getting older and have the benefit of history when looking at our society but I really feel that looking at this country these days is like looking at the Fall of the Roman Empire, with society becoming rotten at the core. No firm values, no respect for our laws and traditions, and politicians treating the people they are supposed to represent with contempt. How I long for some modern charismatic figure to appear who has the power to motivate people to shake off their apathy and start reclaiming what we've all lost.

OH
I'm relieved at your offer - I'm sure you'll be better than some of the other "charismatic figures" history has thrown up since 1900

It is refreshing to find that I am not alone in my thoughts..
OH....To lead a Revolution you have to be vertically challenged...all the great leaders were not very tall....being six foot, tall, dark and handsome you may not fit the Revolutionary leadership criteria
Pity really...

Well well well, I’m heartened to read the sense of outrage from so many enlightened members of this forum. I hope the tirade of futile nonsense from the organic zealots will continue to be challenged for what it is – simply a life style choice. A choice that will never solve the real problems of food production that our world faces. Yes we are treated like a mindless disrespected people by Politicians that just keep telling us what is good for us with NO facts to back up their banal drivel. However their social engineering and brainwashing is beginning to be recognised by the descent citizens of our country and questions are at last being asked.
Call me old fashioned but I want my country back, back to a time when grown ups could ask youths to push off without getting kicked to death, back to a time when you could walk anywhere in my country without fear, back to a time when you saw policemen walking the streets with respect. When servicemen could be proud to wear their uniforms and unemployment was to be pitied and helped from - rather than being a comfortable lifestyle for so many. Perhaps it all started rotting from the sixties, with the chattering classes starting to dominate our lives, when the criminal was to be helped rather that the victim, when the murderer was let out to murder again. Now a law abiding man is sent to prison for defending his home whilst the lowlifes grin from behind the skirts of our modern day nanny politicians.
Still, mustn’t grumble
Barney
