I managed to sneak off to the plot for a couple of hours yesterday afternoon and tidied up my old strawberry bed. It's mostly planted with ciflorette, which have been there for a couple of years now. Anyhow, pulling away all the old leaves (of which there were plenty) and runners & general debris, I found that virtually all the ciflorette plants have been trying to flower! Of course, the flowers haven't amounted to anything, but there were plenty more waiting for the chance. I'm afraid I had to do the decent thing & snip them all off as I thought they would wear themselves out before the 'proper' season, but how ridiculous. We had a touch of ground frost last night, so perhaps that and the removal of their insulating layer will slow them down a little. Mind you, I think I'll get some fleece on them later in the season to get a super-early start.
