Adding lime to compost

Hi,
Having read the last post on rotation and lime, I was wondering if anyone added lime to their compost bins. At this time of year I seem to add a lot of citrus peel and knowing that the worms don't like it too acid it seems a shame to throw away the peel. I know that eggshell is supposed to neutalise but I was wondering if adding a sprinkling of lime to each layer wuld have a quicker and more beneficial effect.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks
Hilary

I do sprinkle lime on the top of the compost bins occasionally, usually when I remember it, and it certainly doesn't seem to do any harm because we get some lovely friable compost out of them.

I also just add a sprinkle of lime to the compost occasionally. Dad used to do this too "to sweeten it up". We do put in lots of citrus peel, onion and leek peelings - that don't go into the wormery - but still have hundreds of brandling worms in the compost, so it seems to work.

Thanks - I will add a sprinkle after each layer of citrus.

Have you got a bokashi bin Hilary? I've been given one and a wormery, and I'll put meat, fish and citrus in the bokashi and other stuff in the wormery. Lime goes on the soil.

Dear Mike,
No I haven't got a bokashi bin - I did think about it but decided with dogs, cat and chickens (until the badger visited) that I never really had a lot of waste food. The ones I looked at were expensive - as for a wormery I actually emptied mine out today and decided not to bother as it was a home made affair and the worms constantly escaped.
So I've almost decided that the compost bins were my best bet.
I know people who are relaly impressed with their bokashi bin - should I re think?

Why make trouble for yourself, Hilary? Just because it works for one person doesn't mean it works for you. I have 2 plastic compost bins at home and 2 on the allotment, and they all seem to rot the stuff down very well, so I don't really have a true need for either the wormery or the bokashi bin. I just go for the variety and the possibility of richer or quicker results.

oops Mike - a bit late since I have since ordered one bakashi (on offer I hasten to add) since I decided that it would be useful for waste food since I quite often regret what I give the dogs ! and it will stop me from eating all the left overs if I can 'feed' the bokashi!! I shall think of it as part of my new health regime..........

I hope you didnt pay more than this (for 2) you really need 2 as you fill for 2 weeks the leave that one another 2 weeks while you start on the other. I've been using them for a while now and dig each binful under a metre square of soil. I put all the scraps as well as a few things I cant be bothered to go down the garden for the regular bins at this time of year, peelings etc.
