Can anybody help with this?
I need to move some established summer raspberry canes from an old plot to a new one asap. I tried this recently, intending to keep as much earth around the roots as possible, but ended up with essentially bare-rooted plants. What I really want to know is: If I dig up the existing canes, which are well established and produce huge raspberries, what should I do with them when they are put into position in the new plot? Can I just leave them or do they need cutting back? If I do cut them back, does that mean I won't get any fruit this coming summer?
My experience of doing this last autumn was that I kept the canes as they were, removing the previous year's fruiting canes, but keeping the new ones intact. I did get fruit from some of these, but they have not produced any new shoots for the coming summer! Others simply died!
What is the best way to go about this. I have some fantastic canes that I really must move within the coming week.

if you cut the canes right back you wont get any summer fruit but may get some in the autumn on the new canes. basically you will be looking at very little fruit next year,
if you leave this years canes on you should get some fruit next summer but it may well take longer for the plants to get back to full production.
