I have just emptied tumbling tomatoes and nasturtiums from some hanging baskets and was wondering if there is anything edible I could plant in them over winter?

As nobody has replied to your query, it looks as if there is nothing edible that could be planted for the winter. I certainly can't think of anything. Better luck with your next query!

I'm not ignoring your question either, I just don't know the answer to this one.

how about some lettuces - something winter hardy like Winter Density... or any winter salad like mizuna, mibuna, claytonia.

you could put strawberrys in and keep them undercover through the winter for an early crop next year?

Thanks folks. It was a bit of a long shot. I have two baskets with alpine strawberries in so I might try a mixture of lettuces. I was planning to keep a succession going both on the plot and undercover anyway so that will just be an alternative. I guess I could bring them in when it's really cold. Hmm...food for thought, as it were!

I plan to grow lettuces on my windowsill instead of trying to grow stuff outside this winter. Currently I have a lovely basil plant growing away happily and looking very lush and green.

You could certainly do a rocket basket -or take cuttings of thyme to nurture them out of the frost. Or you could just line them with suitable soft stuff and let robins nest in them
