planting bulbs

The little gadgets for taking out a core of soil to plant a bulb are fine on cultivated soil but in a field I reckon I need something I can step on to push it in.

Does anybody know of such a thing (local garden centre looked vague and said it probably would be a good idea but they didn't have one!)?

Best of all does anybody know if any stall at Malvern tomorrow will be selling one?

If the ground is suitable, I use my bulldog long handled bulb planter which has treads that you can stand on. In harder/stoney ground I also use a 16lb iron bar as used for fencing post holes.

Do not be tempted to buy a cheap long handled bulb planter made of stainless steel - they just bend within minutes. There are a lot of rubbish tools for sale out there for the unwary.

Yes, hope to meet you at lunchtime tomorrow.

And I'd be happy to buy a decent bulb planter if I can find one because we've got quite a lot to plant. Until now I have used a narrow spade - actually an Irish spade called a Sligo, but similar to a post hole spade.

I'll have a look around tomorrow.

Thanks and looking forward to meeting you
