How easy is it to grow magnolia seeds? I have been given a couple of pods from a large magnolia tree (pink flowers) and would like to have a go. Are there any special tips on how to get them going?
Advice much appreciated.

I notice nobody has come up with an answer for you.
We get RHS seeds each year and they send notes with them but they haven't distributed Magnolias so no help there. It is possible there is something on their web site but that can be time consuming.
Chiltern Seeds - "Grow something new from seed" - have general cultivation notes in their catalogue and on their web site.
Magnolias are in the catalogue :
"Propagation from seed is a slow process...."
M.campbelli "..most magnificent ..Pink Tulip Tree ..large fragrant like water lillies.. if we had sown a packet when we moved in 1980 we would have something to look forward to next spring"
M.x soulangiana "..flowers will appear on younger plants than most other species"
Not a lot of encouragement there and no method. If there are plenty of seeds in the pods try a few methods, some fresh, some stratified over winter, some in the spring etc.

Hi Geoff,
The large seeds like Magnolia must never be allowed to dehydrate and should be kept in a moist cool condition like in moist Perlite or Vermiculite in a polythene bag in the salad drawer of your fridge.
They then need to be sown in early spring with bottom heat and again never allowed to get dry.
They do not need to be saturated because that will do them in also. Certainly not an easy thing for the amateur gardener to deal with simply because it is almost impossible for them to keep a constant watch and without that it is possible when they get home from work and get to thinking about them it is generally too late.
