We have a near riot going on in our association as we have put up the rents this year for the first time in nearly 30 years.

Our plots are not measured in rods but the largest size (a 300 but 300 what we don't know) is slightly bigger than those I've seen elsewhere. The cost for the whole plot is £12.50 plus £5 for insurance, NSALG membership and water making a total of £17.50 per annum.

I think this is as cheap as chips but have no evidence to back me up. Would you all mind telling me how much your rent is for a year please? I have a committee meeting tonight and the AGM next Friday so any information would be great.

Thanks guys

Chanters, I would guess that your measures are 300 sq yds or sq m.

If so that is not too different from the normal sized rod-measured plot at 10 rod = 250 sq yd.

We currently pay £2 per rod and it is due to go up to £2.50 or £2.75 per rod (don't have my "stuff" with me at work).

That covers renting the plot and water supplied via horse-troughs. Mowing and strimming are covered either by volunteers (site agent or plot holder) or the council does it once a year. Fencing, locks, water repairs, a site agents shed per site kept in good repair is paid for by the council. Absolutely no insurance or other stuff like bulk deliveries.

Allotments actually run at a loss if you take the admin into account.

Ours is only £10.00 a plot and was only five pounds a plot two years ago. We have water, but just have to be careful we don't use too much and end up with a huge bill.
They are rented off Woburn Abbey.

And i do all the mowing of the main ride, and side paths, as i have nothing better to do.
But one person did thank me eight years ago, so it makes it worth it. :)
Kind Regards, Old Herbaceous.

I can't say how our plot sizes compare with yours, but this year I paid £8 for a half plot, so this seems broadly in line with yours.

Pretty cheap for all the entertainment involved - why don't you tell them how much they'll be saving on gym subscriptions etc!

Crikey, those are cheap!! Ours are part of Bushy Park next to Hampton Court Palace, and are run by the council. We pay between £18 and £32 per plot per year, depending upon the size.

Each of my two half plots (approx 236 sq.yds)cost £17. 03p last year...

I haven't had the bill for this year starting Oct 1st) yet

I still consider it cheap for all the enjoyment I get out of them..it would cost me more than that to go and watch Leicester City try to play football  I get more excitement watching the plants grow

Hi Chantal,
We have water via troughs, no insurance and the site is currently being upgraded with funds from the sale of part of the site. We will have facilities, but no access currently. Rent for a whole plot is about £29 per annum.
Best wishes,
Vivien

Ours is £51 per year for a full plot. We do have a shop and toilet block on there. It covers insurance and everything else.

Sounds like your members don't know how good they have it Chantal

Our full size plot is £12 per annum, up from £10 a couple of years ago. We have had a trough of water since last year but there are no other facilities, no vehicular access and difficult access on foot. The whole site just comprises 8 full size plots (some are divided), is run by the Parish Council but owned by the Duke of Devonshire's estate, as is most of the farmland around here.

Our plot measures 300 sq yds and we pay £13 a year that includes water and nothings else, its a private allotment in the West Midlands nobody complains as we think its good value.
One draw back some people use it as a dumping ground parts of it is full of rubbish.
We had 2 break ins this past week, they were after power tools, although one chap had his shirts and wellies taken. The locks were cut

East Surrey - Council run, has gone up by £1.00 each year since we took our plot and ominously the invoice we receive has a line for water that has so far, thankfully, remained at zero!!

250 sqm - £32.00 pa (half price for over 60s), there are two water taps with troughs in our area which serve 20 plots. Currently there are approx. 90 plots, but there is space for about 175-200 if they ploughed up some of the rough grass areas.

We've recently been allowed sheds, and there's one plot with a greenhouse, and one with a polytunnel (a bit smaller than it was since the strong winds demolished it last autumn!).

There is a large shed where you can store a limited amount, mostly poles or rotovators and it has a loo in the corner (yes it has a door!). The local allotment association also just happens to have it's shop next to our site, part of the reason we chose a plot on this site.

There is a car park by benefit of the fact that we are right next to a recreation area that contains football pitches, although it can get quite congested when the local youth leagues are playing.

Also a local tree surgeon firm have their yard right next to the association shop - great for bark chips!

Compared to my Dad in the East Midlands who pays less than £10 for roughly half the size I think it's a bit expensive, but then again it's not as much as other parts of the country.

Dear Monika, i hope when the Duke of Devonshire has a cup of tea with the Duke of Bedford they don't get talking about allotment rents, or he might put ours up by another two pounds. :)
I suppose these huge land owners need every penny they can get though, maybe when i'm there for supper next i better tell him myself.

£10 at the moment for about 250 sq mtrs, your allowed a shed, and a greenhouse, the parish council hardly know if we exist, we have a water main and a tap between about six plots, we have to pay for that.

We are hoping to increase to £15, still cheap we think, the extra money will help us to get a petrol strimmer and a communal shed. We will need fence repairs in the next few years.

I think even at 50 squid a year for towns and cities that is not bad.
