Really no such thing as a free lunch

Went shopping at my local big supermarket (mentioning no names, but every little helps...)

While I was putting my shopping through the checkout, the supervisor was nagging the till guy about attending the staff Christmas lunch, but he was adamant he was not going. The supervisor eventually gave up and moved down the line.

I jokingly asked if the meal was that bad (own brand perhaps ) No he said, but we have all been told we have to make our hours up afterwards, so how is that a free lunch

I teach in a CofE Aided school. A year ago the Diocese very kindly invited us to a dinner to thank us for what we do. A 3 line whip was put on going to the dinner. Our school discovered that most other schools were going during dissaggregated teacher day time. Not us. We were being dined and thanked in our own free time! The dinner was very nice but I could have thought of a lot of things I'd rather do in the time I gave to it. So I sympathise with the young till guy. He has probably got quite a lot of things he'd rather do than sit with work colleagues, who he sees every day any way.

We had our Christmas lunch on Thursday, in works time (all 3 hours of it) and we didn't pay. What's more, we have staff lunches two or three times a year (same deal as above) when we all get together for a social. We value them as we're only a small team but rarely get together in the same place at the same time except for staff meetings.

I love my job.

Now we get a voucher instead.

If it makes you feel any better the main attraction at our staff do is a raffle, where the prizes are all gifts received from our suppliers...waaaaheeeey

NO - it was apparently someone had brought a guest with them (which you are invited to do) - BUT the guest tripped and fell during the event, and as we're 'hosting' the event - we're liable for any injury claims.

Isn't H&S fun?

Still, I'm off Saturday to spend my £25 M&S voucher on my Xmas lunch goodies

Our Christmas Party was canceled due to H&S

Our Xmas decorations got cancelled a few years back because of H&S. The office is a slightly bleaker place as a result, but we've made up for it with tins of chocolates & biscuits instead.

At school I sometimes get two Christmas lunches [on different days, you'l be relieved to hear], because our Prep School and Upper school have staggered timetables. This year, though, I had prep teaching when the upper school was lunching and upper school teraching when the prep had their Xmas bash. That sometimes happens too. I still haven't worked out whether I've been unfortunate or lucky.
