just had my first one, from a bed of 8 plants started from seed 2 years ago. Delicious, but i think i may have picked it too early as there was no 'choke' although it was a fair size, there are 4 others growing how do i know when they are ready before they go over?

I don't know whether this is much help as I've never grown them but when I've occasionally been able to buy artichokes in the shops (which have all had a small heart) the outer bottom smallish leaves have been turning slightly brown, so I wonder whether it's a case of leaving them to mature on the plant until they reach this stage. Pity you didn't get a heart after waiting so patiently for two years to get mature plants from seed as I think the heart is the best part, especially smothered in butter ! But perhaps June is still a little early in the season for the fruits to be maturing? Hope you have better luck with your remaining plants.
