Red Squirrel

In the last few weeks we have had two red squirrels feeding in our garden. We have at least four regular greys so I was surprised to see reds as well - I thought that they would not occupy the same territory. Is it true that the greys will eventually drive away the reds? Do they ever inter breed - there is a grey which has a very distinct reddish tinge! I really don't know much about squirrels but am really enjoying watching them. The reds are becoming bolder and have started coming down at lunchtime now (as opposed to dawn). Considering we live at the edge of the city we have amazing wild life here. There is a woodpecker in the trees at the back of the house. I haven't seen it yet but hear it regularly. As soon as you get close it stops pecking and no matter how long I sit still for it won't start again until I am some distance away.
Just as well there is plenty of wild life to watch because the weather is awful - haven't seen a blink of sun for weeks!

Yes - the greys will, especially as they are territorial. If you have a look on the Defra site, they tell you about managing grey squirrels. You could trap them. That way, if you get one of the red ones, you can release them, rather than using a gun!
