Mouli with forked roots

I'm harvesting some early Mouli about 6 - 8 inches long, at which point most of the roots start forking. I know commercially grown ones are often over 12" long and wonder how I can prevent this happening next time without planting them in cardboard tubes. I dug the planting area about 12" deep before sowing but we do have stoney soil so it's not ideal for root crops.

The answer is in the question, I think. Stones. In any case 6-8in long at this time of the year is good going.

These plants seem to be worth growing so perhaps next year I'll try growing some in really deep containers filled with compost, although I envisage there might be a problem getting them out without disturbing their neighbours.
