Quick guide to posting pictures

There is a slightly unhelpful bit in the FAQ, so I thought I'd try and be a bit more explicit.

1. Firstly, you need to put your photos online. Plenty of people use services like Flickror Photobucket or if you know how to store it on your own website, then you can...

NB - If you're resizing your image, then the best width is no bigger than 468 pixels - any height is fine...

2. Make sure you can view your image, simply by typing your Images URL (web address) into the address bar of your browser. i.e. http://www.kitchengarden.co.uk/current/cover150.jpg

3. Then you need to start your post, and insert the following text into your post

[img]your%20Images%20URL[/img]

4. Alternatively, you can simply type the URL, select it with your mouse, then click the IMG button.

5. Hopefully, now you'll have an image, like the one below...

As an additional check, I've found that if you want to use an image from a website, just pasting the URL in doesn't always work.

You may need to add the final text .jpg before an actual image displays. For example, if I've clicked the [Img] button, then just paste the following link in, it fails:
http://www.pbase.com/cmalsingh/image/110843795/medium

When I add the final text .jpg in, this then appears

Below the submit button there is now an option to attach a file.
Witch I have just used in this post.

This has probably come in with the last upgrade, witch was after Mr PH got his chips.

So is the idea to help people who don't have their own site to store photos on (eg. Flickr etc)? Good idea.

Can I add the method I now use?

1) Download image/s from your camera to your PC

2) In whatever editing software you use, resize to not more than 640 pixels wide

3) On the forum click Post Reply

4) Click Choose File button

5) Find your image file on your PC and double click its name - this will then appear beside the Choose File button

6) Click Add File button below

7) Finally click Place Inline button, which will have appeared below the reply box

Looks complicated, but, like most things, it isn't when you've done it a few times.

I don't like storing photos or any other data on websites or services which I have no control over.
I use Alan's method but I am unsure as to why the image needs to be re-sized to 600 bytes wide. Is there a technical reason or is it just the amount of storage involved or download speed?
Over compressed .jpg files are also a reason why pictures may look fuzzy.

As a thought, if anyone has an Apple computer and wants to know how to re-size I can probaly help.

Not available for PC stuff - had enough of that when I was working.

Ideal resize is to 640 x 480 pixels

I've had a few difficulties in posting my pictures recently but have now followed Alan's advice and it works well, thanks Alan for the information.

I was intrigued by Retropants picture

I looked at it and saw that it was 631Kib.
Now at first I sat here thinking how comes retro has managed to post a picture that big. Then I homed in on the Kib instead of KB or MB which my pictures usually show as a unit of measurement.

So being inquisitive I looked up Kib. I have never ever heard of it before
Do you know something ............................................... I wish I hadn't.


My brain hurts now, having sat here and read all the bits(pun intended) about a kibibyte being 1024 this or that or something else

I'm not sure if retro's picture is owned by the Kuwait International Bank
or features a Jeredite king from the book of Mormon
or could be the logo for the Kazak Injenerler Birlestigi

The most appropriate alternative, to my now addled brain, is the Kuming Institute of Botany

A plea to the more technically computer literate amongst you, please don't bother explaining what a Kib is, I have changed my mind and really don't think I need to know
