Volunteer potatoes

Morning all,
After a hard slog of a weekend on the allotment which included the usual passionate discussions at tea break there is a topic we were undecided on.
Are spuds left in the ground from last year (I think you call them volunteers from reading OH's thread)safe/good to eat? On our plot some do and some dont citing disease, lack of taste etc.
As I have two rows from last year that I missed and have now regrown to a foot tall I'm especially interested.
Thanks for any advice you have.
Regards
David
