Hi all,
I am looking for those Green balls with holes in that you can use with canes to make fruit cages etc. Anybody have any idea who makes them or what they are called? I have tried several Garden centers and although they know what I mean they do not have them.

Or get some cheap tennis ball type dog toys and make holes in them!

Those green balls are called Build a Ball, we had some from a shop in Solihull a few years back,I can't remember the name of the shop at the moment but they sell all kitchen utensils a bit pricy since then we use tennis balls from the pound shop.

How do you make fruit cages with them, though

I know lots of people use different things. tennis balls, bottles etc. but I have to say having used the build-a-balls they do have the advantage of being heavier, having angled holes and some that go right through the ball and some that don't.
As far as I am concerned it is money well spent. They will last a life-time.

Hi all,
We position four corner stakes,with a one litre pop bottle,or even plastic plant pots upturned,and placed onto the stake.If areas are large/larger,- use more stakes.In the centres use the bottle/pot/stakes.Now simply drape your netting over and secure.
We have used this method for years,and it has always secured 95%+ of our fruit crops,and leaves a temporary cage instead of a permenent one.
Not "rocket science",but leaves your money in your pocket.

That's the method I use too Mark, except I put jam jars on the top of the canes. They're nice and heavy so they don't come off easily and the netting slides smoothly over them.

I have just remembered the name of the shop where we bought Build the Ball, don't know if you are still interested in them, its called Lakeland kitchenware they have about 30 shops around the UK, if interested log into Google Lakeland shop and you will get the listof areas where the shops are.
