I've got a splendid tomato plant growing in the earth in my oldest compost heap along with a couple of potato plants. I know they're of the same family and not supposed to be grown together (although I'm not exactly sure of the exact biological reason) but can anybody tell me if I'll do any real harm by letting all the plants continue growing together until they fruit.

I seem to think that the only reason is the passing of blight from potatoes to tomatoes. If they're in your compost heap I reckon you've nothing to lose - and you should be able to clear the potatoes before the blight arrives.
