Some time ago if my memory is right there were recommendations given on this forum for an effective spam filter (free?)
Can someone please oblige with the recommendation as the search utility cannot find it.

I use adaware personal

Google have one if you use it's toolbar.

I use Norton which gets rid of most of the 100 or so offers of Viagra or nubile young wimmin every day...

I use Mozilla Thunderbird for email and have no spam trouble. I also have Norton running but I've heard that there are prorammes better than this available. I don't know whether the service provider you use has anything much to do with the problem but when we were with the awful AOL a few years ago, we had loads of spam problems.

As a novice on computers can anyone tell me if you can get a virus that will corrupt your files if you are not connected to the internet.

Just slightly changing the subject... a few years ago I received a tip that I have used since receiving it.

In your address book under the heading "Worm Alert" put an e-mail address of:-

!1000

This will come up top of the list of addresses

Apparently any worm trying to access and utilise your e-mail address book won't get any further....I temporarily lost my address book recently and the darned 'worm alert' wouldn't let me regain access to it

I had to obtain my address book from my laptop and reinstall...so it does work

hi Brenjon, a virus is a small program, you normally catch them from emails or websites, but you can get them if you transfer files from another infected computer via a cd or memory stick. once they are on your puter they may either start immediatly or at some later time. hope this helps richard

I have 3 e-mail addresses...don't ask me why I keep the 2 old ones. .

My main one is on ic24.net and all but never picks up any spam.

screaming.net address, now Tiscali, gets loads of spam.

and similar but not quite as much spam comes in via fsnet address.

Logic, of course, suggests to ditch the 2 old addresses...but it seems I don't do logic

Just for info... there are many reasons why you might get spam...

1. If you (or anyone else) has put your email address on the internet, it may be in a spammers list.
2. If you have an easily guessable email (say brian@hotmail.com) the spammers will guess it.

There's not a great deal you can do to stop spam, but you can minimise your exposure by avoiding the above.

To avoid seeing in your inbox, you might use Opera (which is a browser and email client in one), or Thunderbird, or even download one of the many excellent spam-filters available for Outlook.

Personally, I use Gmail which not only stops most spam, but because it's web-based (like hotmail) means that I never download any attachments onto my computer!...

I did what you suggested but it didn't come out on the top of my address list.

Have I done something wrong?
