Could anyone tell me if you can buy a liquid form of Derris, or a pwoder that could be mixed to form liquid Derris. Also, can Derris be bought in bulk quantities?

I've been asked to enquire by a plot holder who doesn't have access to t'internet.

However it's not as cheap as the kays one (may be a different brand).

Though I try to avoid pesticides, the one pest I can't get rid of (especially in the Spring) are aphids. Derris is the only non-man made thing I've found that helps. The ladybird larvae & other biological controls are great, but don't seem to be around in great enough numbers when the aphids are wiping out my peppers, okra, aubergines etc (sob!).

They are looking to find supplies so that it can be sold in the lottie Stores (only have powder derris at the mo and it's very time consuming when spraying it on is faster and more accurate). Also, as a few people use it they are looking to club together to see if they could buy in bulk to get a better deal. It is an expensive item to buy.

Colin, I sympathise with you. My roses are devastated with the little green Crack Squadron.

I've been using liquid Derris for the first time this season, but without much success against blackfly on broad beans. Is it ineffective against these guys or should I spray more liberally? (bit fay with the spray?)

Hi Colin,
I take it that your Peppers and Aubergines are under cover and if that is the case it is possible to use Nicotine safely and without upsetting anything else.
Nicotine sprayed last thing at night or even when it is dark will get rid of your pests and will not affect Bees and the like the following day.
Contentious as this may be it is very effective.

Thanks JB. The affected ones are either in a conservatory or a greenhouse.

Can you talk us through the Nicotine procedure, or does it mean me disappearing into the greenhouse each night with a packet of Woodbines.....?

It may vary according to circumstance & pest. I've only ever used it against greenfly. However I've grown Broad Beans for the first time this year and many of them have blackfly. Haven't bothered spraying them as they're almost finished cropping.


Lizzie mentioned using Derris powder. I also tried that this year, but am still mastering the technique. With the liquid spray, you get a fairly good idea that it's covering the leaves. I still haven't mastered getting a jet of powder to squirt out consistently.

I'm also wondering if it would be worth misting the plant with water first, to ensure the Derris powder sticks & stays to the affected surfaces. Any thoughts?

Good morning Colin, i would have thought it would be a good idea to mist the plants first, as i seem to remember that they recommended to dust when the dew was still on the plants.

It always was a job to get an even dusting, it always seemed to be all or nothing.
