Root nasties.

Last time I grew veg.-back when the world was young- there seemed to be umpteen things you could mix with your soil to ensure the demise of such as cutworms, eelworms, leatherjackets. Yesterday I visited my local Klondyke garden centre to buy such, only to be told that nothing now exists to take the place of something like Bromophos. They've an ARSENAL of sprays and dusts to combat things that attack foliage but nothing for nasties at the roots (apart from pravado for vine weevil). This is what the manager told me .Is this really the way it is?
