Cherries

My two cherry trees - about six years old - are looking likely to set their first big crop this year.
Have any of you discovered and used a successful (or at least fairly successful) method of stopping birds taking the whole crop just before it's ripe?
Last year I tried hanging redundant/free CDs in the branches. No effect whatsoever - in fact I suspect the birds just brought their CD players and had a party.
All suggestions welcome.

had the same problem last year. Managed to salvage a few by wrapping my trees in fleece, but it wasn't really practical.

Bought netting this year, but I hate the thought of the birds getting trapped, so will do CDs and some other shiny, distracting things too.
