Hi me little old mate....just a quick question,i planted the seeds you gave me two weeks ago or maybe longer, but i stil see no sign of any growth yet,should i have soaked them first as they were pelleted or should i just be more patient?

It has been very dry of late but as long as you have watered them they should be with you shortly.
I should give them a few light watering's about 4 hours apart and standback!

Hi Grock, I'm glad to see your posting.

I had 2 goes at this. The first lot of Early Carrots went into my allotment 4-5 weeks ago. Nothing ever came of these, though as JB says it's been dry.

I tried again in a garden bed, using leeks & early carrots. The first lot were in around 2-3 weeks before the carrots started sprouting.

Like you I wasn't sure about pelleted seed and after there was no sign from the "straight planted" ones, I did try soaking the remainder.

JB, any other advice on pelleted seed? It certainly makes spacing carrots easier!

Prior to pelleted seed I always grew in spent MP compost about 2 inch V trench watered and then sowing the seed cover with more spent MP compost and
Mounded about 2 inches high then fine watering down the row this normally ensures the seed is about 0.5 inches below the ground (the Compost always flattens out) I do exactly the same with Pelleted seed and make sure that they are kept moist, not saturated but just moist and I have not experienced any problems.
I have some Early Nantes 2 which will be ready for pulling as immature but scrumptious little Carrots sown in the Poly Tunnel on 3rd February.
The other experiments are going ahead very well.

Just to say that the pelleted Early Nantes I got from you have done well outside. Sown April 1st most were appearing by 22nd. Two things that I think are very important - always keep the soil moist and make sure the slug pellets are in place around the rows. 1 little slug can eliminate a row in a couple of nights - the one disadvantage possibly of sowing so thinly.
