Just been out for a look around and discovered that my new asparagus bed has had some disturbance; it appears as though three of the crowns have been pushed upwards by a mole and several spears broken and/or eaten through by someother visitor The crowns are one year old and been in the ground since Easter; any suggestions as to the longterm prognosis? Might they still settle again and carry on with their development or is this going to cause me big problems

Dear Miss Sarah, i think i would be tempted to just firm the soil, and give it a good watering for now.
If the problem happens again we will have to think of some better answers for you.

That did make me smile, we can always live in hope.

Just to update that, following a couple of weeks of peering at the bed I can finally as new growth emerges!

On Thursday night the Badgers broke into a friends garden and virtually wiped his Asparagus bed out along with two 30ft rows of peas. His protection was pig netting buried nearly 2ft and the rest above ground doubled at ground level then full height and the Blighters dug underneath that!! They are really becoming more of a menace each year.

That is absolutely heartbreaking I was feeling glum at this morning's loss of 16 junior cabbages but that puts it in perspective...

Talking of badgers - one got into the hen house (forced the door) and was trapped in. Sadly badly bit all three hens - have given up keeping hens. Just hope the blighters don't come back into the veg patch.
